This term in Science, we are learning all about teeth and digestion. Today, we explored why we chew our food and how chewing is the first step in digestion.
We started by recapping the names and jobs of our different teeth, including incisors, canines and molars. We discussed how each type of tooth helps us to bite, tear and chew our food.
To help us understand this, we used large model teeth and some crisps to practise chewing. We placed the crisps between the teeth and watched how they were broken into smaller pieces. We then used the back teeth (molars) to crush the crisps even further, showing how chewing helps make food small enough to swallow safely and easily.
We had lots of fun with this hands-on activity and learned how important our teeth are in helping us digest our food!
